Show Notes: Finding Flexibility and Balance as a Working Mom
Hey, hey friend! Welcome to Episode #259 of The Secrets of Supermom Show!
The Struggle Working Moms Know All Too Well
In this week’s episode of The Secrets of Supermom Show, Lori sits down with Kym Insana, mom of four boys and co-founder of Always On Digital, to talk about what it really takes to build a business, raise a family, and create balance in a world that often tells moms they can’t do both.
Kym shares her story of leaving the corporate world when flexibility wasn’t an option and building a company that supports working parents—especially moms who want meaningful careers and time with their families.
“I started Always On Digital because I saw so many amazing women leaving the workplace after having kids—not because they wanted to, but because the system didn’t work for them.”
From Corporate Constraints to a Family-Friendly Business
Kym began her career in radio and digital media, but after becoming a mom, she found herself constantly asking for flexibility—requests that were often denied. Seeing talented coworkers leave after baby number two inspired her to start a company where flexibility wasn’t a privilege but a priority.
Her business model centers on hybrid work and teamwork, ensuring every client gets stellar service while team members get the flexibility they need to live their lives. “Our clients know our mission,” Kym says. “We might not always be at a desk, but everything gets done—and that’s what matters.”
The Power of Asking (Even When It’s Scary)
Lori and Kym dive deep into one of the biggest struggles for moms in the workforce: asking for what they need without fear of judgment.
Many moms stay silent, afraid that requesting flexible hours or work-from-home time will make them look less committed. Kym reminds listeners that “you can ask—and you can do it professionally.” She even shares a strategy: lead with your results and successes, address concerns head-on, and offer a trial period to prove it works.
Building a Business on Your Own Terms
For moms dreaming of leaving corporate life, Kym shares candid advice about starting a business:
- Talk to your potential customers first. Validate your idea before diving in.
- Understand your finances. Even with a marketing background, Kym learned the hard way that business finances are different—and crucial.
- Decide how fast you want to grow. Kym chose to self-fund rather than take on investors, preserving her independence.
- Be ready to pivot. COVID-19 forced her company to expand into new areas, proving that flexibility applies to business, too.
Her path wasn’t linear. She was laid off unexpectedly before she was ready to launch—and had to make a quick decision to leap anyway. “It felt like being pushed off the high dive,” she laughs. “But it worked.”
Redefining Work-Life Balance
As a mom of four, Kym admits balance isn’t perfect, but flexibility makes it possible. Her company’s “team-based” client service model allows employees to share workload and support one another through family commitments. This transparency with clients builds trust and stronger relationships.
“Once you start being open about your real life, you realize everyone else is juggling, too,” Kym says.
When Do You Feel Like a Supermom?
For Kym, those “Supermom” moments come when everything aligns—like answering emails from the bleachers at baseball practice, getting work done, and still being present for her kids. It’s not every day, but it’s worth celebrating when it happens.
“Even when it’s not perfect, I remind myself it’s still better than it used to be.”
One Small Step for Busy Moms
Kim’s advice for moms trying to balance it all: accept help. “If someone offers to help, take it,” she says. “It doesn’t mean you can’t handle it. You can always pay it forward later.”
Lori agrees: teamwork really does make the dream work.
About Our Guest: Kym Insana
Kym Insana is a seven-figure business owner, digital marketing expert, wife and mother of four boys. As the founder of AlwaysOn Digital, she helps leading brands reach the masses through dynamic digital campaigns that generate consumer interaction and sales so they can scale. Top brands lean on Kym’s expertise, including Good American, Enfamil, the Texas Rangers and Johnston and Murphy.
Kym jumped into the digital marketing world before it became part of the modern fabric for business growth. For more than 20 years, she’s led sales and digital campaigns for top advertising agencies in New York City. But dealing with a two-hour commute while growing her family proved to be a turning point. She felt compelled to start a business and gain her time back. The yearning for freedom quickly outweighed the desire for a corporate career.
At the same time, Kym noticed other successful women quitting the workforce for similar reasons. That prompted her to ask herself, ‘what if I could build a business that fit these talented women and their ideal work schedules — while still providing them with a career?’
In 2016, AlwaysOn Digital was born.
Today, it’s a seven-figure company that proudly offers creative and flexible work schedules for employees, which are made up of mostly super-motivated mothers (often former executives) who desire income and increased work-life balance.
Kym’s mantra is “You can work hard, have career success and the family life you desire.” She has shared her story and expertise on stages across the country, including The Big in San Francisco and iMedia Brand Summit.
AlwaysOn Digital is certified as a Women Owned Small Business through WBENC.
