Show Notes: Planning Your Life with Jam Family Calendar
Today we welcome our first guest of 2025, Jessica Etting. Jessica is the co-founder and CEO of Jam, the new all-in-one shared family calendar app designed to combat mental load and make modern family life easier and more equitable. As a working mom, Jessica felt firsthand the burden of the mental load and wanted to create a space where family logistics and information could live for the whole family to see and engage with as a team, as well as automations that make life simpler for everyone. Jessica is also a seasoned screenwriter and author, and lives in Los Angeles with her husband and three sons.
In this episode, we’ll explore actionable steps you can take to reduce your mental load, improve family communication, and feel more in control of your schedule. Plus, we’ll introduce you to Jam, a game-changing family calendar app that can make all the difference.
The Mental Load of Parenting: Why It’s So Overwhelming
It’s not just about being organized—it’s also about communication. According to Jessica, co-founder of Jam, talking to busy parents revealed that the real issue wasn’t just keeping things in order; it was coordinating with family members who may not be on the same page. As Jessica shares, “It’s not just an organizational problem; it’s a communication problem.”
Moms often feel like they’re carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders, making decisions about what’s for dinner, when the kids need to be at practice, and even remembering the smallest details like where the dentist appointment is. And let’s face it—text chains or scattered whiteboards don’t make things easier. We need a way to streamline all of this information in a way that’s accessible to everyone in the family, at any time.
Better Communication Means Less Stress
This is where Jam comes in. Jessica and her team designed Jam to solve the communication problem many families face. Imagine being able to forward a school newsletter or a coach’s message straight into your family calendar with one simple action. That’s what Jam allows you to do.
The best part? It’s not just for moms. With Jam, everyone in the family can add important events or information to the calendar, so no one has to rely on a partner to remember everything. It’s all in one place, accessible by anyone, anytime.
“I love that we’re helping families communicate better,” Jessica says. Jam eliminates the frustration of searching for that lost text message or the sticky note that got lost in the shuffle. When you use Jam, everyone in the family is on the same page.
Practical Tools to Reclaim Your Time
As we kick off the new year, many of us are aiming for better organization, more balance, and less stress. But how do you achieve these goals? Jessica shares a few of her favorite tools to help busy moms reclaim their time:
- Use Family Calendar Apps Like Jam: With Jam, you can easily add appointments, events, and to-dos from your phone, tablet, or computer. And since everyone in the family can contribute, the mental load is spread out, allowing you to focus on the things that matter most.
- Delegate Tasks: Don’t try to do it all yourself. Start by delegating some responsibilities to your partner or children. Research shows that involving kids in family chores not only lightens your load but also teaches them valuable life skills.
- Leverage Subscriptions: Subscriptions to essential items—like vitamins, household supplies, or groceries—can save you time and energy. Set up automatic deliveries for the things you need regularly, so you never have to think about running out.
- Combine Social and Self-Care: Jessica loves to combine socializing and exercise. She schedules regular walks with friends, which provides the physical activity she needs while also offering a mental health boost. If you can combine multiple needs into one activity, it’s a win-win!
Small Steps to Start Feeling More Organized
Jessica’s advice for busy moms looking to start the year off right? Download Jam and get started with organizing your family’s schedule. Once you have it set up, think about what tasks you can delegate to others in your household. Get everyone on the same page and start sharing the responsibility of running your family’s day-to-day life.
Starting small can have a big impact. Whether it’s getting your family to help with chores or syncing everyone’s schedules into one place, you’ll begin to feel less stressed and more in control.
