Katie helps change kids’ relationship to food, both through work in the kitchen and helping parents of picky eaters. She’s a former teacher, two-time TEDx speaker, writer, and mom of 4 kids. She created the Kids Cook Real Food eCourse, which was recommended by The Wall Street Journal as the best online cooking class for kids. What Is the Life Skills Now Summer Camp?
Life Skills Now is a virtual summer camp designed to equip kids and teens with over 100 essential life skills, from practical hands-on tasks to crucial soft skills.
How it works:
- Short, engaging videos taught by 70+ trusted experts
- Daily “missions” that send kids into real-world action
- Skills covered include: cooking, cleaning, budgeting, conversation skills, personal responsibility, car maintenance, and even what to do if you get pulled over
- Age Range: Kids ages 5–18 (plus a special track for preschool parents!)
- Bonus: Over $10,000 in prizes for kids who complete missions!
The best part? Kids get excited about learning — and parents get support in raising confident, capable humans.
“When the whole family shares responsibility, everyone wins — and kids feel like valuable contributors to the family team!”
Why Teaching Life Skills Reduces Anxiety in Kids
During the episode, Katie shared an eye-opening truth: Modern kids experience record levels of anxiety because many don’t feel capable or confident in real-world tasks.
By teaching kids life skills early and often, we give them:
- Confidence in their abilities
- Resilience to handle failure and bounce back
- Independence to tackle new challenges
- Connection to their families by contributing to the household
“Anxiety goes down when kids feel capable. Confidence skyrockets when they can solve real problems.”
Whether it’s knowing how to cook dinner, introduce themselves, or handle a flat tire, these skills matter — and they make transitions into adulthood so much easier.

How to Get Started (Without Overwhelming Yourself)
Katie’s advice to busy moms? Start small.
✅ Pick one child
✅ Set one small goal
✅ Teach one simple skill this week
Even tiny steps — like teaching a five-year-old to wipe the kitchen counter or a teen to write a thank-you note — build momentum. Over time, these small skills lead to major self-confidence.
Real-Life Stories from Life Skills Now Camp
- After Christmas parties where teens didn’t know how to introduce their friends, a new workshop on how to introduce people was created.
- After a teen was pulled over and panicked, Katie’s team added a “what to do when you get pulled over” workshop featuring a real police officer.
- Families spent hours outside doing bike maintenance missions — kids learned to clean, repair, and care for their own bikes!
The real-world impact is undeniable — and it all starts with a few minutes a day.
Why Life Skills Now Summer Camp Is Different
Unlike other summer camps or programs, Life Skills Now focuses on:
- Bite-sized lessons (perfect for busy schedules)
- Real-world practice immediately after learning
- Parent support workshops so you can reinforce skills at home
- Intrinsic motivation — kids pick their favorite skills to master
- Building family teamwork and reducing parental overwhelm
“Life Skills Now helps parents and kids feel like they are truly on the same team. Less stress for you, more skills for them!”
