3 Types of Space You Need on Your Calendar

Do you feel like you’re constantly juggling a million tasks but never really get everything done? It can be exhausting to go from one activity to the next without taking a breath. What if I told you there’s a simple solution to managing your time better? Let’s talk about three types of space you should add to your weekly schedule to boost productivity and reduce stress.

These time management tips for busy moms can help you not only get more done but also feel less overwhelmed. Learn how to incorporate buffer time and white space into your weekly routine for a more balanced life.

1. Daily Buffer Time: Prevent Overwhelm by Adding Gaps in Your Day

Buffer time is the time you need between tasks to catch your breath, switch gears, or even grab a cup of coffee. Without buffer time, jumping from one task to another can drain your energy quickly. One of the easiest ways to build buffer time into your schedule is by ending meetings or activities 10 minutes earlier than planned. This allows you to transition smoothly into the next task.

Example: If you have a meeting at 10 a.m. and another at 11 a.m., schedule your first meeting to end by 10:50. That 10-minute break will help you reset, refocus, and show up better for your next commitment.

2. Weekly Buffer Time: Plan for the Unexpected

Life is unpredictable, and something is bound to come up—whether it’s a sick child, an unexpected work task, or a personal emergency. By scheduling a weekly block of “buffer time,” you have a designated time to handle those unforeseen events without blowing up your entire week.

For many moms, Thursdays are a good day to add this time, but pick whatever works best for you. This reserved time can be used for tasks you didn’t expect or projects that took longer than anticipated.

3. White Space: Recharge and Refocus with Free Time

White space is unscheduled time for you to rest, recharge, or do whatever you feel is necessary in the moment. Maybe it’s 15 minutes in the morning for meditation, or an hour on Saturday to run errands solo—this is your time to reflect and ask yourself, “What do I need right now?”

Building white space into your calendar isn’t just a luxury—it’s essential for your mental and physical well-being. Use this time for self-care, whether it’s getting some quiet time, taking a long bath, or spending quality time with loved ones.

It’s easy to overbook yourself, but adding buffer time and white space to your schedule can help you manage your time better, reduce stress, and avoid burnout. These simple time management strategies will help you create more balance in your life and ensure that you show up as the best version of yourself for both your family and yourself.
