Does your morning feel like the perfect start to your day or a dumpster fire of chaos? Maybe somewhere in the middle depending on the day? Do you wish it was different?
Today we are talking about the key secrets to a morning routine that actually works.
So, I want to start with a few things you might have heard about a morning routine.
You have to wake up at 5am.
You have to have at least an hour of focused time.
You have to use a complicated list of strategies.
I don’t think any of those are true. What I know is that if your morning is not working for you, you can change it if it isn’t setting the tone for the day you want to have.
Ready to dig into the secrets? Here we go!
Secret #1: You need to give yourself more time.
You are a busy mom, and time is your currency. However, there is something called the planning fallacy. The planning fallacy is an “optimistic prediction bias in which people underestimate the time it will take them to complete a task.” So, you think it will take your toddler 15 minutes to get dressed and put on his shoes, but you are wildly off in this prediction. You think it takes you 5 minutes to quickly make lunches, but if you were to time yourself, it almost always takes longer. And when you succumb to the planning fallacy for all the components of a busy mom’s morning routine, you end up with far less time than you actually need.
Which means rushing.
And power struggles.
And frustration and arguments and a day starting with stress instead of connection.
So, the first secret is to literally give yourself more time. This could mean waking up earlier (and going to bed earlier and drinking less wine or coffee at night). But it could also mean reducing the mental and physical load of the morning but moving tasks to the night before. Things like picking out clothes, prepping breakfast, making lunches, baths or showers, and backpack packing.
Are your kids big enough to lighten the load even more? Can they make their own lunches, pick out their own clothes, set their own alarms, prep their own breakfast or backpacks, be responsible for getting signatures at night instead of during the morning rush hour?
Simply getting extra time in your morning can change the morning mood entirely.
Secret #2: You are following someone else’s plan.
You found a morning routine that a guru uses, and for some reason, it just doesn’t work for you. Are you…
…journalling because someone told you you should?
…taking a freezing shower because someone told you you should?
…drinking a shake because someone told you you should?
Here’s the deal, your morning routine should match your goals for your morning and for your day. If you want to feel calm and happy, you should incorporate things in your morning that make you feel calm and happy. If you want to feel productive and energized, you should incorporate things in your morning that make you feel productive and energized. If you want to feel quiet and peaceful, you should incorporate things in your morning that make you feel quite and peaceful.
Your morning may not be working because you are focusing on tasks instead of feelings.
Secret #3: Consistency is key.
Do you start every morning with at a different time with different activities? Sometimes you make lunches in the morning. Sometimes you don’t. Sometimes the kids shower at night. Sometimes they shower in the morning. Sometimes you do a gratitude practice and sit quietly with tea for 5 minutes. Sometimes you push snooze 3 times and run around like a chicken with your head cut off.
For you and your children, consistency is key.
When you are consistent but flexible…
…you allow you and your family to get into a habit which makes EVERYTHING take less thought and effort.
…you allow your children to know what to expect, resulting in fewer meltdowns and arguments.
…you can better figure out what is working and what is NOT working.
I would love for you to DM me on Instagram at Secrets of Supermom and tell me your favorite secret for a busy mom’s morning routine!
Alright, friend, let’s make it a Monday!
